Fuel Efficiency Calculator Information

The Fuel Efficiency Calculator helps you to determine what type of fuel is best for your wallet. It focuses on how much it costs you to travel as opposed to how much it costs you at the pump.

The Fuel Efficiency Calculator is a unique program to help you to find out which fuel is the most economical for your vehicle.

Many people base their fuel purchasing decisions on which is the cheapest at the pump. Others decide based on how far they can travel on that fuel. However, the key to fuel economy is not "which fuel is the cheapest at the pump?" or "which fuel lets me travel the furthest?" The key to fuel economy is "which fuel lets me travel cheapest?" and that is exactly what the Fuel Efficiency Calculator can tell you.

If by purchasing the cheapest travelling fuel you can save just 1c per kilometre, you could still be saving $5 per tank, per vehicle. The Fuel Efficiency Calculator can independently track all of your vehicles and how economical they are on up to three different fuel types (for example, "Regular", "Plus" and "Premium").

The Fuel Efficiency Calculator also provides the "What If?" window. Essentially this window allows you to tell the program the price of one type of fuel and it will tell you the 'breakeven' prices of the other types of fuel. As an example, you may see one fuel for 95c per litre. Another type of fuel, though, may be more economical for your vehicle and so it may be cheaper in the long run for you to purchase that type of fuel if it is cheaper than $1 per litre. The "What If?" window will tell you this.

The Fuel Efficiency Calculator lets you decide how to show your savings: for each type of fuel, you can display the amount extra you could have saved, the amount you did save or how much in total you could have saved. It also provides a handy historical graph feature to see your expenses and savings over time.

The following screenshot depicts the Add Fuel window. In this particular screenshot you will notice that you enter the cost per litre and the total cost is determined for you. If you would prefer to enter the total cost, you simply click on that value and you can then change it. Your preference is remembered and so you will be able to enter the total cost straight away next time you add fuel.

The What If? window allows you to determine the economical 'breakeven' points when you are about to add fuel to your vehicle. If you can tell the Fuel Efficiency Calculator the price of one grade of fuel, it will tell you when it is actually more economical to buy another grade of fuel with a different price. In this particular screenshot, if 'Plus' grade fuel is 96.6c per litre, it is still more economical to buy 'Regular' grade fuel if it is cheaper than $1.023 per litre.

Finally, the Historical Graph.  The following is an example of the graph produced by the Fuel Efficiency Calculator. In it, you can see the different tanks of fuel that you have added over time and the accumulated costs of the different grades of fuel. At the same time, you can easily see the savings for each of those grades over time as well.

When using the Fuel Efficiency Calculator it is worth understanding the limitations of what it does so as to keep your calculations as accurate as possible. The absolute, most important thing to understand is that the calculator assumes that when you put in a new tank of fuel, you are exactly replacing the amount of fuel that you have used since adding the last tank. The easiest way to ensure this is to always fill your tank. If you do this one simple thing from the very start of using the Fuel Efficiency Calculator, you will have avoided the largest of all pitfalls.

The Fuel Efficiency Calculator assumes that the fuel your vehicle is using is 100% the grade that you tell it you put in the tank. This means that the more the fuel can be that grade only, the more accurate the calculations. The easiest way to ensure this is to try and run the tank down as far as you feel comfortable before refilling it. This is not so much of a problem if you intend to add the same grade that you did last time.

When adding a tank of fuel to your vehicle, the Fuel Efficiency Calculator needs to know how far you travelled on the last tank. This is the case for every tank you add except for the first one. The easiest way to determine this is to reset your tripometer every time you refill. When you go to add more fuel to your vehicle, you will be able to read the tripometer to work out exactly how far you have travelled since last adding fuel.

When first starting out with the Fuel Efficiency Calculator, it is suggested that you record the usage of at least two full tanks of each grade before starting to use the most economical grade for your vehicle. It is also suggested that every so often you do use one of the less economical grades. This will help to keep the calculations true.

After using the Fuel Efficiency Calculator for a while and assuming you trust the calculations enough, it is suggested that you change your settings such that you are showing your totals and averages "With accurate averages and totals" and that you are displaying your savings amounts as "How much I could have saved in total". These are the default options and are the best way of getting a true report of your total savings over time.

In Summary...

  • Above all, always attempt to fill your tank completely.
  • Always try and run your tank as low as you feel comfortable with.
  • Always reset your tripometer when you fill your tank: that way you can easily work out how far you travelled the next time you fill up.
  • Even if you know the most economical fuel grade for your vehicle, you should still use the other grades every once in a while.
  • Show accurate averages and totals with how much you could have saved in total for the best estimate of your savings.
